Summary of Changes in ISO 45001:2027

ISO 45001 is undergoing significant revisions, with the final version expected to be released in early 2027. This standard focuses on occupational health and safety (OH&S) and aims to enhance worker wellbeing. The shift in focus is moving from merely preventing physical injuries to a more comprehensive understanding of worker wellbeing.

Key Changes in ISO 45001:2027

Psychosocial Health & Wellbeing (Clauses 3 & 6)

The most notable change in the upcoming standard is the integration of psychosocial health and wellbeing. The 2018 version primarily addressed physical injuries, such as slips, trips, and falls. The new version will formally incorporate the principles of ISO 45003, which provides guidance for psychological health.

  • New Hazards: You will need to identify psychosocial hazards, including excessive workload, bullying, burnout, and lack of role clarity.

  • Control Measures: Risk assessments must now include measures for mental health and stress, not just physical personal protective equipment (PPE).

Climate Resilience for Workers (Clause 4.1)

The 2027 revision will embed climate resilience deeply into the standard.

  • The Context: You must assess how climate change impacts health and safety.

  • Impact: This includes risks such as heat stress for outdoor workers and respiratory issues from increased pollution or wildfire smoke.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) (Clause 5.4)

The "Consultation and Participation of Workers" clause will expand to promote inclusivity.

  • The Change: There will be a stronger emphasis on ensuring safety communication and equipment are suitable for a diverse workforce. This includes gender-neutral PPE and language-appropriate training.

  • Impact: You must demonstrate that safety measures are accessible to all workers, regardless of their background or physical ability.

Occupational Health vs. Occupational Safety (Clause 8.1)

The distinction between health and safety will become clearer in the revised standard.

  • The Focus: The revision will introduce more stringent requirements for long-term health monitoring, addressing chronic issues like noise-induced hearing loss and ergonomics in remote work.

Managing Change (Clause 6.3)

ISO 45001 will adopt Clause 6.3, which focuses on planning for changes.

  • The Requirement: Any organisational change, such as restructuring or new technology, must be assessed for its impact on safety before implementation.

  • Impact: If you automate a process to enhance quality, you must document how this automation affects specific safety risks.

Action Steps for OH&S Managers

Review Psychological Risk

Do not wait for the final publication in 2027. Start using ISO 45003 now as a framework for your stress and mental health policies. This proactive approach will prepare your organisation for the upcoming changes.

Climate Assessment

Document how your policies for "Extreme Weather" or "Heat Stress" protect workers during peak summer months or flood events. This documentation will be crucial for compliance and worker safety.

Audit Your PPE

Ensure that your protective equipment and facilities are suitable for a diverse workforce. This includes providing proper fit for women and being sensitive to cultural differences.

By implementing these changes now, you can position your business as a leader in occupational health and safety, ensuring compliance with the upcoming ISO 45001:2027 standard. This proactive approach will not only enhance worker wellbeing but also foster a secure and well-regulated business environment for your clients.
