ISO9001:2015 Changes: Key Updates & Impacts

ISO 9001 Icon

Summary

The ISO 9001 standard is currently undergoing its first major revision since 2015. The update, which will be titled ISO 9001:2026, is currently in the Draft International Standard (DIS) phase and is expected to be published in late 2026.

The revision is being described as an "evolution, not a revolution." It retains the familiar 10-clause "High-Level Structure" (Annex SL) but introduces several targeted refinements to reflect modern business challenges like climate change, digital transformation, and ethics.

Headline Changes

Integration of Climate Change (Clause 4)

While technically introduced as an amendment in February 2024, the 2026 version formally embeds climate considerations into the core text.

  • Clause 4.1: Organisations must determine if climate change is a relevant internal or external issue.

  • Clause 4.2: Organisations must consider if interested parties (customers, regulators, etc.) have requirements related to climate change.

  • Impact: You don’t necessarily have to become "green," but you must document that you’ve analysed if climate factors (like supply chain weather risks or carbon regulations) affect your ability to provide quality products.

Quality Culture and Ethical Behaviour (Clauses 5 & 7)

There is a new, explicit push to move "Quality" from a checklist to a mindset.

  • Leadership (5.1.1): Top management must now actively promote and demonstrate a quality culture and ethical behaviour.

  • Awareness (7.3): Employees must now be made aware of the importance of quality culture and ethics, not just the quality policy and objectives.

  • Impact: Auditors will likely look for evidence of "soft" factors - how leadership communicates values and how staff embody those values in their daily work.

Clearer Separation of Risks and Opportunities (Clause 6.1)

One common criticism of the 2015 version was that "opportunities" often got ignored in favour of "risks."

  • Structural Change: Clause 6.1 is being split into distinct sub-clauses for Risks (6.1.2) and Opportunities (6.1.3).

  • Impact: This forces organisations to demonstrate a proactive approach to identifying growth or improvement opportunities rather than just mitigating threats.

Digital Transformation and Emerging Tech

The standard is being modernised to acknowledge the role of technology.

  • Digital Tools: New guidance (specifically in a significantly expanded Annex A) addresses the use of AI, big data, and automated systems in quality monitoring.

  • Data Integrity: There is a heightened focus on ensuring the reliability and integrity of digital data used for decision-making.

Supply Chain Resilience and Change Management

Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic have led to tighter language around business continuity.

  • Operational Resilience: There is more emphasis on supply chain fragility and the need for contingency planning (Clause 8.2.1).

  • Planning of Changes (6.3): Requirements for managing changes have been expanded, requiring organisations to consider how they will verify the effectiveness of a change after it is implemented.
